September 2007 Repair Report - It's Fall! Time to Get Projects Completed

Colder Weather Effects Curing Time

This time of year we always get numerous phone calls.

They go something like this:

"Your Flex-Tec repair epoxy been working great all summer long. What happened? Did you change the formula? It's not curing overnight like it did in the summer."
Well, here's what happens to all epoxies in cooler temperatures: As the temperature drops, the cure time increases. Epoxies are temperature curing. The hotter it is, the faster it cures. The colder it is, the slower it cures.

It's also important to remember that the temperatures can really drop at night this time of year. It could be 80 degrees in the afternoon when the material is first applied. But as the sun goes down it gets colder faster. Night time temps in the low 50's-upper 40's can really slow the cure!

Watch out for heavy dew!

When conducting repairs on a horizontal surface (such as a window sill) heavy dew can turn the epoxy white and slow down the cure.
Graph showing how thickness and temperature effect cure times

The remedy is quite simple. Just cover the surface with a piece of heavy mil plastic sheeting (a plastic drop cloth or garbage bag will do). The Flex-Tec will not stick to the plastic.

What happens if the Flex-Tec gets white from the early morning dew? No worries, just wait. The warmer weather will help to evaporate the moisture. Also, a heat gun set at a low temperature will speed things along.
