Glaze-Ease 601

"How does Glaze-Ease compare to linseed oil putties?"

Linseed oil putty has been around forever. It's been in use for at least 400 years.
Linseed oil putty is basically linseed oil and chalk (calcium carbonate). As linseed oil putties dry, the oil off-gases and leaves behind a rock hard mass of caulk. This mass has a poor adhesive strength and allows moisture to penetrate. This hard mass also cracks during expansion and contraction of the wood and glass. Yes, even glass moves a little with hot and cold!

Modern formulas of glazing putty have made little change from the 400 year old formula. These materials take a long time to skin and can take as long as 4 weeks to harden enough to provide a sound surface for paint.

Introducing Glaze-Ease 601

Based on high quality acrylic resins, Glaze-Ease 601 provides a sound and durable seal to the glass and wood ( or metal ) sash. Glaze-Ease 601 is quick to install and tools to a traditional look in seconds. Within 2 hours, 601 can be painted. Preferably with an acrylic primer and top coat. 601 cures with minimal shrinkage and will remain flexible for years.

Project Profile

Baltimore Basilica

In 2006, historic preservation architect John G. Waite Associates, Albany, NY, chose Glaze-Ease 601 to glaze the new laminated glass in the great dome of the Baltimore Basilica.

The historic Baltimore Basilica, built from 1806-1821, was the first great metropolitan Cathedral constructed in America after the adoption of the Constitution. "When the Cathedral was first constructed, the only building that could compete with it in size, scale, and architectural sophistication was the United States Capitol," said Jack G. Waite, Principal Architect with John G. Waite Associates, Architects. "Architecturally, it was the most advanced building in the country."

Blair Lee of Alleghany Restorations, Morgantown, WV was the contracting firm chosen to restore the Great Dome.  "Glaze-Ease was the perfect choice for the dome", says Lee, "Because 601 contains no solvents that could potentially damage the laminated glass."

Established in 1991, Allegheny Restoration & Builders Inc. provides quality restoration services to historic structures in West Virginia and around the country.
