Summer sun is
great for a tan, but what about for wood? |

Wood and Sunlight: The Damage Has
Just Begun! |
 |
Spending most of my time in the Midwest and Eastern part of the
US, I tend to think of wood damage as trapped moisture and wood
fungi having a feast leaving no room for dessert. And then
there's all those pesky bugs!
Ultra Violet light radiation can cause just as much damage as
H2O.
|
The UV rays degrade
the lignin that is the glue holding the wood cells together.
The evidence is grey wood that will "sluff off" when scraped
with a knife or even your finger nails. Deep checks or fissures
will be noticeable in the wood surface.
Many call this "dry rot"
True dry rot is a fungi uncommon here in the US and found mostly
in the damper climates of Europe in interior situations away
from any sunlight.
Weathered, grey wood is usually a combination of UV damage and
brown rot fungi. Very common east of the Mississippi River.
Severe UV light damage can be found in desert climates and areas
of the US at high altitude. Imagine the UV damage on southern
exposures of window sills in Leadville, Colorado ( elevation
11,000 feet ) UV light carves deep unforgiving cavities in wood
at such high elevations where even a SPF 50 sun block isn't
enough from getting a wicked sunburn.
Paint is more than color
Today, we tend to think of paint as liquid color adding value,
beauty and design. Paint is all that and more! The primary
function of paint is to protect the underlying surface from
moisture and yes... UV damage.
Dry and In the Dark
The durability of an epoxy repair is only as good as the surface
prep and continued protection from moisture and sunlight. This
means applying and maintaining a quality paint coating. Keep the
wood dry and in the dark and it last will forever!

Is
It Too Early to Think About
Winter? |
 |
It's time for weatherstripping!
It's August and the sun is slowly heading south for the winter
.The days become noticeably shorter by the middle of August and
the sun begins to loose it's summer grip. Fog settles in the
valleys and begins to remind us of times to come.
It's time think about windows and air-infiltration
ART has developed an effective method for reducing
air-infiltration in older and historic windows. Made of a
combination of cellular PVC and Nylon Pile, The Easy-Stop
Weather-stripping System is ideal for reducing air-infiltration
and protecting the original details of an older home.
